The SACU Customs Officials Training on AfCFTA and the Workshop on the AEO Programme

The SACU Customs Officials Training on African Continental Free Trade Agreement and the Workshop of Customs and Government Agencies on Risk Management and Authorised Economic Operator Programme that was held on 10 – 14 February 2025 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

South Africa, as the host, welcomed delegates and underscored the importance of collaboration in successfully implementing the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, Risk Management, and the Authorised Economic Operator Programme. Namibia, as the SACU Chair, emphasised that collective efforts within SACU will drive regional progress in implementing these key initiatives.

Approximately 58 Experts from Customs and Other Government Agencies attended the training and workshop in Johannesburg, with an additional 70 participants joining online.

1st Joint Council Meeting of the SACU- Mozambique-UK Economic Partnership Agreement

28 January 2025

The Ministers and Senior Officials from the Southern African Customs Union Member States, Mozambique and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK), and the Executive Secretary of SACU, at the 1st Joint Council Meeting of the SACU- Mozambique-UK Economic Partnership Agreement that was held on 28th January 2025 in Gaborone, Botswana. The Ministers established the Institutional and Governance structures by adopting and signing decisions on the adopted Rules of procedure for the Joint Council, Trade and Development Committee as well as for Dispute Avoidance and Settlement and Code of Conducts.

Announcement: Successful Completion of the 5th Joint SACU WTO Trade Policy Review

The 5th Joint SACU Trade Policy Review was held on 25-27 October 2023, in Geneva, Switzerland. SACU is reviewed every seven years with the previous review having taken place in November 2015. Its primary aim is to foster enhanced compliance among all Members with the rules, disciplines, and commitments established within different WTO Agreements.

Change of the SACU Chairmanship 

14 July 2023

The Executive Secretary of SACU, Mr. Thabo David Khasipe, facilitated the official handover of the SACU Chairmanship from the Kingdom of Eswatini to the Kingdom of Lesotho on the 27th July 2023 in Maseru. The event was graced by the presence of the Right Honourable, Mr. Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Lesotho and Chairperson of the SACU Summit. Honourable Mr. Neal Rijkenberg, Minister of Finance of Eswatini and Former Chairperson of the SACU Council of Ministers, presented the Handover Report and passed on the Chairmanship to Dr. Retselisitsoe Matlanyane, Minister of Finance of Lesotho.
